New research suggests the link between doing the right thing and “sleeping well” is no mere metaphor…. Unethical behavior can lead to insomnia.
The research has shown when people engage in unethical or intentionally counterproductive behaviors, they felt they have lowered their own moral standing. As a result, they experienced negative feelings about themselves, including guilt and shame. This meant that as evening came, they could not unplug from work. They began to ruminate, revisiting their own distressing behaviors. Unable to relax, they could not get to sleep quickly. For your team living with integrity and honesty certainly makes everyone more valuable to those whom they work with and ultimately the customer. It affects you, however, on a much deeper level. It allows you to genuinely feel good about yourself and live with a sense of joy, peace of mind, and happiness.
